Erin – a vintage stylized teen photo session in Seattle

It was one of those unexpected photo sessions that came together so beautifully that it took my breath away, and will always be a favorite session of mine. I’ve known Erin and her twin sister, Allie, for several years now, first photographing them for their 8th grade graduation pictures. When both girls chose to be spokesmodels for Lorraine Marie Photography (that’s us!) in their upcoming senior year, we wanted to give them a unique experience together. I knew that their family had a passion for airplane, so we decided it would be great to get out to the airfield with their vintage Russian plane and re-create an Amelia Earhart inspired theme for the girls.

Pulling this shoot together was truly a team effort! Erin’s mom Joni made sure the girls had just what they needed with wardrobe pieces to complete the look, their dad made sure that the plane was in perfect condition (a story in itself!), and we made sure the girls were looking the part with a trip to downtown Seattle for hair and makeup. Gabriel and I brought our studio lighting to create these dramatic looks, and the rest just fell perfectly into place. Erin (and Allie) were such naturals in front of the camera. I think we may have just launched them into new careers!

Desare’s Bat Mitzvah. ~lorraine marie, children’s photographer in seattle

There are just a few memorable events that we carry with us through life – a graduation day, a wedding, the birth of a child – and for some young girls as they turn 13, the day they become a Bat Mitzvah ( a daughter of the commandments).

If you talk with Desare about her experience, she’ll tell you that reaching this milestone was “a lot of hard work and stress”, but you wouldn’t know it by looking at her. She handled herself beautifully with grace and poise…and along the way, she learned some helpful tips to pass onto the next young girl who will walk in her footsteps.

Desare was surrounded not only by a supportive community of friends but also an entourage of family that came out to stand with her on this significant day of her life. Now that’s a blessing!

One of the tasks of a Bat Mitzvah is to carry the Torah scroll through the congregation, which is a celebration in itself. The next task is to read a portion of the scripture in Hebrew, and speak for a few minutes about the significance of the passage. Desare’s theme was the peace offering, and how each of us can give not only a thanks offering to God, but a thanksgiving offering for the gift of His Son, Yeshua (Jesus). Good word, Des!

Katie – a stylized teen photo session in Seattle

It wasn’t difficult to figure out what we should do for Katie’s stylized teen photo session – because Katie is a girl who knows what she likes! Add to that a very defined sense of style, and we knew right away that a classic look we found in vintage Audrey Hepburn photos was the perfect idea for inspiration. I first sent Katie to check out ModCloth – an online retailer that has the best fashions for indie, retro and vintage-era looks. Katie had her hair styled at Swink Style Bar in Seattle, and they did a great job of the side-swept ponytail with the touch of elegance. But the most fun we had was going to the Mac counter at Nordstrom for Katie’s makeup session. Kayleigh knew exactly how to bring out Katie’s features beautifully, and we watched in amazement as she brought out Katie’s flawless beauty. None of us could get over how awesome a job Kayleigh did, so this is a huge shout-out for her services: if you need help with makeup, or an application for a special event, you really have to look her up!

With hair, makeup and wardrobe taken care of, we decided to head out to the University of Washington campus…the perfect backdrop for Katie’s stylized session. Here are some of our favorites from the day…

Kids of the Northwest – A Charity Book Program to Benefit Compassion International

We are so excited to announce a new charity book program featuring the Kids of the Northwest! Over the next few weeks, we will be photographing children and teens from around the Northwest to be featured in a fine-art, limited edition coffee table book. Proceeds from the registration fees and book sales will be donated to Compassion International, to support their programs to meet the critical needs of children in poverty around the world.

For just $75 per family, Lorraine Marie Photography will provide a professional photo session for your child (or children) in the Seattle region, and your child will be featured in this fine-art book. Our sessions will be geared about each individual child’s interests. We’re so excited about the possibilities this creates! Seattle Teen Portraits ~ Vintage Photo Shoot by Lorraine Marie Photography

There is an unspoken myth that swirls around the Seattle area in winter – that it is too cold, too gray, and too wet to venture out for outdoor location portrait sessions. Well, I am here to de-bunk that myth! Take this session with Sarah, for example. Sarah volunteered to be my model as we wanted to showcase a new style of photography we’re introducing for kids and teens. Not the cookie-cutter, run-of-the-mill type of photographs, but stylized sessions with a purpose and a theme. How fun is that?

For Sarah, we wanted to introduce a vintage theme, so we went out to one of our favorite locations, Discovery Park, and brought with us vintage props (yay for old cameras that we’ve been collecting!), headbands found on Etsy, bracelets from Forever 21 and Sarah’s own awesome flowered shirt that fit the theme so well. Everything tied together so beautifully and we are incredibly happy with the results. Thanks, Sarah, for kicking us off in style!

I‘ll be the first to admit that “beach weather” isn’t exactly synonymous with “Seattle weather.” Still, there are some gorgeous rock beaches and lighthouses to be found in the Seattle area, like the West Point Lighthouse by Discovery Park. I love the fields and fallen logs here—they provide such a natural and beautiful backdrop for Nikki’s senior shots! My favorite photo is the last one of this series, where Nikki is looking into the distance. It’s a very compelling shot, and shows off her superb modeling skills as well. ~Ashley

Heart of Seattle. ~Family Portrait Session on Location in Seattle

There’s nothing sweeter than photographing a family session, especially when they make it look this fun! I love the photos of the sisters laughing together, from the fields in Discovery Park to the streets in downtown Seattle. My favorite shot is the last one, with all the girls of the family coaxing a smile out of their dad. The natural ease and joy they show is infectious even through the photos themselves! ~Ashley

One of my favorite spots in Duvall is Taylor Park, where a huge boulder rests in the middle of the woods (keep an eye out for it in the photos below!). Here, I love the photo of Michael standing in the pathway. He has a great smile, and the backdrop is picture-perfect… you can even see a hint of autumn in the trees! ~Ashley

A senior favorite year-round, we had Kyle’s photoshoot by the Experience Music Project in downtown Seattle. I love the shot of him jumping in front of the building–it captures a lot of personality and shows off the fun shapes in the background, too. My favorite photo, however, is the last one. It’s a twist on the classic “pose with your favorite instrument/sports object/prop” photo and still manages to highlight his passion for baseball. ~Ashley
